Spreading a New Understanding of Emily Dickinson through Philanthropy

If you live in the United States (or in a country where it is easy to order books) and you want to contribute in helping fans of Emily Dickinson, Susan Gilbert Dickinson and Martha Nell Smith's work - read on.

If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain

For weeks now, I had been thinking about a way to help spread the word about Martha Nell Smith's decades of research and hard work on a new understanding of Emily Dickinson, mainly through her relationship and correspondence with her sister-in-law and soulmate Susan Gilbert Dickinson - a unique relationship and powerful influence that has been deliberately ignored, hidden, modified by so many scholars up to date.

Helping to spread the word about this new understanding of America's greatest poet and equally interesting and smart muse, Susan Dickinson, became dear to my heart. Emily and Susan's story and art made me connect with people from around the world on Twitter, people who share the same passion.

While I am (so) fortunate to be living in a country where it is easy for me to get access to books - and even luckier to be living a few hours away from Dickinson's town - I realized most fans struggle so much to get the books they deserve to read.

Today, I didn't have a "burst of poetry" like Emily would, but I had an idea.

What if every fan of Emily and Susan's living in the US or in any other country where it is easy to order Martha Nell Smith's books focuses on helping one or two people they met (and trust) on social media to get these volumes?

I already have my couple of Twitter friends I want to do this for, I do have access to Martha's books and I can financially afford to help a beloved Dickinson fan or two in the world. This will be my own way to "stop one heart from breaking" and to "not live in vain"... I believe that everyone should have access to books, especially gems like Martha Nell Smith's. Everyone should be able to fulfill any passion they have, the way I do.

I am am not pressuring anyone to do the same - I'm only casting some pod in the nearest breeze but conscious of the Scarlet Freight it can bear to other eyes...

How many Flowers fail in Wood —

Or perish from the Hill —

Without the privilege to know

That they are Beautiful —

How many cast a nameless Pod

Upon the nearest Breeze —

Unconscious of the Scarlet Freight —

It bear to other eyes —
