Old Bethpage Village Restoration

Filming place of most outdoor scenes of AppleTV show "Dickinson"

Most of AppleTV show Dickinson's outdoor scenes were filmed in Long Island, at an open air museum which specializes in 19th century Long Island life with original houses that were brought from a few places around, to create a mind blowing 19th century village. Guests can go and spend most of the day walking through a few acres of land, visiting most of the houses where knowledgeable staff dressed in 19th century clothes can tell them about what life was at this time in this part of the United States.

Dickinson, the show, was filmed there. I drove to Long Island and spent a few hours walking the trails that are depicted in so many episodes. It was a beautiful Spring day (May 29th, 2022) and the museum was open for Memorial Day with live events every hour or so.

Parking Entrance

At the entrance where I purchased my ticket, I asked the staff about the filing of the show and one of them seemed to know a few things about it. She pointed me to a map where we circled the houses that were used for the show. She mentioned how self-sufficient the production was and how easy it was to work with them. Most shooting days were happening when the museum was closed to just a few people from the museum staff were working when they shot the episodes. Luckily, I found a few of them that afternoon and I will be sharing what they remember seeing and experiencing.

But first, here is the map of the museum, where I circled the main buildings used for Dickinson. I didn't have time to visit the Church and another building so I will have to go back soon but below are the places I got to see. I also recognized more places than what the staff pointed me to, as most of them didn't watch the show:

Map of the Village

From the Reception Center (#1 bottom left of the map), I walked down the first train on the right. This is the view of the first houses I ran into:

A) This trail leads to a circle with a few houses and a gazebo that were used very often in the show. The gazebo (#5) is not the one built by the production of the show (they couldn't leave that one there) but it was still used for many scenes.

This is the "circle" that was used for downtown Amherst scenes at places like the General Store and Betty's dress shop.

The Gazebo is on the left side of this picture, hidden by the tree branches.

The General Store in Dickinson is "Layton General Store" (#7) at the museum (top right corner, in yellow) and the "Noon Inn" (#8) (left corner, in red):

This is the real Layton General Store at the museum:

And this is how both buildings were used in the show:

The show's General Store:

The "Noon Inn" sign on the left, versus Dickinson's sign on the right

This is the column Hailee Steinfeld was holding on to while carrying books on her head in season 1:

At the General Store, there are three bedrooms upstairs. The staff told me that a scene was filmed in one of them. I assume it was the biggest room, used for the "I have never seen volcanoes" episode, based on the wallpaper:

And here is a video of the room:

C) The Homestead and the barn areas

(work in progress)

The first floor of the house was built and removed after the end of the show. We can still see the shorter grass on the floor, the entrance and where the fences were.

The little cabin below is the one we see covered with antlers in the show. It is still at the museum, and it couldn't be moved so it is still in the same spot.
